September is designated as Gynecologic Cancers Awareness Month, Leukemia and Lymphoma Awareness Month, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month among others - so we’re spotlighting the new Galleri multicancer screening now available at Cloudberry.
The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances for successful treatment. However, only five types of cancer are currently detected with routine individual screening tests: colorectal, lung (for those at risk), breast, cervical and prostate.
Because many cancers produce no symptoms early on, they often go undetected until the later stages. But even before symptoms appear, many cancers shed DNA into the bloodstream as they develop in the body – and those DNA fragments can act like unique “fingerprints” suggesting the type of cancer present. And now, thanks to advances in DNA testing, we can identify the probable type of cancer with the Galleri multicancer screening, available through Cloudberry.
Through a simple blood test, Galleri screens for more than 50 types of cancer. Every time you take the test, you get a point-in-time “snapshot” identifying DNA shed by cancer cells at the time of testing. If a cancer signal is found, results can predict the tissue type or organ associated with the cancer signal to help determine next steps.
The Galleri test is recommended for adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those ages 50 or older. For more details, talk to your provider; you can learn more about Galleri at their website.
Please note: The Galleri test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur.
